Irma's Passport: One Woman, Two World Wars, and a Legacy of Courage Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Robinsonauthor -- A moving portrait of courage and a panoramic view of a violent century : This memoir/biography covers most of the violent history of the twentieth century from an intensely personal perspective. It shows Irma, a young girl from a small Bohemian town, grow into a resilient woman who faced war, persecution, and homelessness with passionate courage, intelligence, and resolve. Her story is told by two narrators who beautifully complement each other. One is Irma herself in her own words in journals and recollections; the other is her granddaughter, Catherine Ehrlich. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jim -- Fascinating history, a joy to read. : This is a fascinating story, and a joy to read. It is packed with moments that can scarcely be believed, but that at the same time mesh so perfectly with both known history and all the small details that make us human that it conveys not just feeling, but understanding. It’s the kind of history that could only be written by a woman. We might suppose Irma survived to tell her tale partly because, as a woman, she was so often underestimated by the men around her. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Marian Leah Knapp -- A stalwart woman refuses to give up her fight for freedom. : A stunning story of one undeterred woman who overcame daunting odds as hell descended on Europe before and during Nazi rule. This book has two protagonists. One is Irma, the author’s grandmother whose courage and shrewdness kept her one step ahead of persecutors as she fought for dignity and respect for herself, and the Jewish people. The other is the author who spent years researching and documenting Irma’s personal story and the complex, frightening environments in which she lived during the WWI and WWII eras. My profound admiration to both of them for their great achievements. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from DotsDaughter -- Legacy of Courage, indeed : I gobbled up the book in 24 hours. The author, granddaughter of the protagonist, Irma, has written a masterful memoir about her grandmother and the sweep of history in which she lived. The author controlled the narrative so well--I could hardly put it down. It was in turns breathtaking, sweet, elegiac, incisive, heartbreaking and astounding. It is a story about an accomplished, university educated (rare in Irma's day) woman who lost everything in a bid to save the life of her son, and in so doing, saved her son and herself. In the face of almost unimaginable loss, Irma carried on with resilience and panache throughout her long and accomplished life. I can't wait to read it through again.
